Venizelo’s House in Halepa

The parental house that housed Eleftherios Venizelos for 30 years is located in Halepa, Chania, where Tambakaria is also located.

The building was purchased in 1876 and the construction was completed in 1880. In 1905 Eleftherios Venizelos started from this house for Therisso to participate in the revolution of 1897. In 1910, when he became the prime minister of Greece in Athens, the house in Halepa was rented. The present form of the Venizelos House was acquired in 1927 when he returned to Chania where he renovated it radically. Then, as the beginning of the Second World War, it was inhabited by his sons.

In 1941, in the Battle of Crete, Venizelo’s House was bombed. But the Germans restored it and used it as the headquarters and residence of the German Commander of the Fortress of Crete. However, during the German Occupation Venizelos House suffered serious damage and vandalism.

The Greek State purchased Venizelo’s House, which was bequeathed to the grandson of Eleftherios in 2002 and granted it to the National Research and Research Foundation “Eleftherios K. Venizelos”.
All the venues of Venizelos House bear the personal stamp of the leader and preserve their original form even today. The interior of the house is adorned with furniture of the 1920’s chosen by him and his wife.
